Islands Reborn steel mill layers: Stacking and Smelter Ratios

Islands Reborn steel mill layers stack vertically using a ratio of two smelters for every four steel mills. Each complete layer produces roughly 500 steel per hour, using input output chests and center beach ball splitters to prevent item despawns.

Layer Ratios and Machine Requirements

The factory update introduces automated production where a steel mill requires iron and coal fuel to operate. In the KLKL build design, an efficient module uses two industrial smelters placed above four steel mills. Placing fewer smelters creates a bottleneck: running a single smelter for four mills cuts total steel output by half because the mills run out of smelted iron.

Supplying the smelters requires an exact totem balance. The tested setup uses four iron totems and one coal totem behind each smelter. This ratio feeds sufficient raw ore into the smelting units without overcrowding the intake belts. Players expanding their ore farming operations can assemble each layer using basic building blocks, stone bricks or glass, input output chests, conveyor segments, and a beach ball crafted at the basic workbench.

Layer Scale and Performance Comparison

Adding vertical tiers increases production while keeping the physical footprint confined to a compact central drop zone.

Layer SetupMachine RequirementsHourly Output and Constraints
Single Layer4 steel mills, 2 smelters, 8 iron totems, 2 coal totemsProduces 500 steel per hour; lowest initial material investment
Two Layers8 steel mills, 4 smelters, 16 iron totems, 4 coal totemsProduces 1,000 steel per hour; recommended standard for consistent passive income
Four Layers16 steel mills, 8 smelters, 32 iron totems, 8 coal totemsProduces up to 2,000 steel per hour; approaches the item spawn limit where dropped iron can despawn

A single layer takes roughly 30 minutes to complete from ground level, whereas upper tiers take approximately 15 minutes each once the base conveyor line is functional. When planning an island expansion for money making, two layers provide a steady baseline before hitches in item drop limits occur.

Constructing Upper Production Layers

Building upward requires extending the structural frame directly above the previous tier. To begin an additional layer, build support pillars one block higher than the totems of the floor below. This spacing ensures enough clearance to place new machines without collision issues.

The core of each tier sits around a centered beach ball splitter. Place four input output chests facing outward toward the machine positions, leaving a single space between each chest and its corresponding steel mill for a short conveyor belt. Above the central opening, place a beach ball surrounded by four stair blocks angled inward. Smelted iron falling from the top smelters hits the beach ball, splitting evenly into the four chests beneath it.

Position two smelters on parallel sides above the mills, facing directly inward toward the beach ball drop chute. Conveyors behind each smelter feed raw ore from the four iron totems and single coal totem. Proper alignment is critical during island building: if a smelter sits too far forward or backward, ore drops miss the chute and fall off the structure entirely.

Managing Item Flow and Preventing Despawns

Uncontrolled item drops on long conveyor belts cause dropped items to despawn before reaching machines. Stacking steel mills mitigates this issue by funneling smelted iron directly through input output chests rather than continuous open belts. The chests buffer iron bars, letting them pass steadily into the steel mills without sitting loose in the game world.

Enclosing the entire drop path with solid blocks or glass walls ensures materials do not bounce out. When aligning stairs around the collection chute, placing blocks at quarter-pixel positions creates smooth ramps that glide items into the central collection stream. Applying these alignment techniques to your steel farm design stabilizes the automated flow and protects metal ingots as they move toward final storage.
